WHAT ARE WE DOING?

Elective 1: The Global Village

In this elective students explore a variety of texts that deal with the ways in which individuals and communities experience and live in a global context. Students consider the positive and negative aspects of the global village and the consequences of these on attitudes, values and beliefs. Students also consider the role and uses of media and technology within the global village and different attitudes people may have towards them. Students respond to and compose a range of texts to investigate how and in what ways living in a global village may influence the ways we communicate, engage and interact with each other.

ELECTIVE RUBRIC: These points should be used as a guide in developing your final thesis arguments

Exploring a variety of texts that deal with the ways individuals and communities experience and live in a global context.

Consider the positive and negative aspects of the global village and the consequences of these attitudes, values and beliefs.

Consider the role and uses of the media and technology within the global village and different attitudes people may have towards them.

Investigate how and in what ways living in a global village may influence the ways we communicate, engage and interact with each other.

RELATED MATERIAL

You are also required to have supplementary material of your own choosing. Recommended TWO pieces.

English Syllabus: Standard Module C

The Year of Living Dangerously

How do people respond to living in ‘The Global Village’?

Hoes this text communicate ideas, knowledge, attitudes and values of different areas of society – the foreign journalists in Indonesia in 1965?

You must understand the context of the novel – social and political situation of Indonesia, and how this affected the outside world.

You will need to focus of textual features in your response.

The Global Village

This is the idea that the whole world is viewed as a single community because of the connections through electronic communications. The speed and ease of the internet has made it easy to overcome the boundaries of distance.

What impact does the global village have on individuals and communities?

What are the positive and negative aspects and how does this help shape ideas, values and behaviours?

In this novel, it is the access of the media to the political upheaval in Indonesia that affects the attitudes and events in that nation. This also has positive and negative effects on the nation.

Think about other nations that have been affected by media intervention – Vietnam War. The backlash from the world after they witnessed the brutality of this war through the media.

We need to question the power of the media in manipulating events and attitudes, not just in a nation, but outside views on that nation.

What about the famous image below:

This image made the world weep, but the photographer was determined to show the world the darker side of a nation.
